We know that it's hard to find the right counsellor to work with. How do you know based on a bio and a photo, whether you can share the deepest darkest parts of yourself with them. Here are some tips to determine if the therapist is right for you. Remember it's your counselling session and it has to work for you!
One of the biggest predictors for therapeutic success is rapport - whether you connect with the therapist or not. That means, a large part of whether you'll get the results you want, is based on the relationship you form with the therapist. Do you generally like the therapist, do they make you feel comfortable, can you speak freely, do you understand what they say?
It's so important to feel safe, connected, heard and valued in your sessions. A great therapist will create a safe space for you to be you, no judgement, who creates trust and confidence. It's totally ok to ask for what you need. Some people prefer a gentle approach, others want tough love and directness - the right person will adjust their style to suit your needs and preferences.
Don't be afraid to leave if it's not working. It's ok to break up with your therapist. It's ok to switch and learn from someone new. The best counsellors will understand that the fit is important.
Skills! The right therapist needs the right skills for the work. If you want to work on addictions, seek someone with that skillset, if you want to work on sexual issues or relationships, hunt down a qualified therapist with the best practice training in the area. Ask the therapist what frameworks they use and what they will apply to your sessions - a great therapist will work within a couple of therapeutic frameworks to support your needs.
Give them feedback. At Love Therapy Australia, we love to help you meet your goals, so we explore these with you in your first session and develop plans around your goals. If you change your goals, we change the treatment. The best counselling services should be flexible and responsive to your needs.
Happy hunting... and hey, we are always over here if you need us ;)
